I Mailed One To Every Grandchild I Have. Now Our Whole Family Carries The Same Little Cross.

It cost me less than a greeting card apiece. My grandkids haven't put them down since.

A small white pouch at every place setting
Last Thanksgiving, I set a small white pouch at every plate. Nobody knew what was inside.

Nobody said anything at first.

Six place settings. Six little white pouches, one resting on every napkin — my grandkids assumed it was candy. The teenagers assumed it was something they'd have to pretend to like.

Inside each pouch was a small wooden cross, about two inches long, carved with a gentle curve and a little heart at the center. I had one more in the pocket of my apron. Mine was older. Much older.

And when my oldest grandson asked, "Grandma, what are these?" — I told them the story I'd never told anyone.

The night before my surgery, my doctor reached into his pocket

Five years ago, it was me in the hospital bed. I'll spare you the details — at my age you've heard them all. What matters is the night before the operation, when my surgeon stopped by on his last rounds.

I told him the truth. "Doctor, I'm scared. I don't know how this ends."

He was quiet for a moment. Then he said:

"Walk by faith, not by sight." — 2 Corinthians 5:7

I almost laughed. I said, "I thought you medical men were men of science. I didn't think you believed in any of that."

He looked at me over his glasses. "Ma'am, I've worked in this building for fifty years. I have watched people walk out of here when every chart and every scan said they wouldn't. Nobody — nobody — believes in God like the people who work in a hospital."

My surgeon placing his small wooden cross into my hand
Then he reached into the pocket of his white coat.

And he took out a small wooden cross — worn so smooth from fifty years of carrying that the little heart on the front had almost faded away. He closed my fingers around it.

"I've carried this one long enough. Your turn. Tomorrow morning, hold it, press your thumb into the curve, and pray. I'll be praying on my side of the table."

I held it in pre-op until they put me under. It was the first thing my hand went looking for when I woke up.

The surgery went well. I won't tell you a piece of wood did that — the good Lord and a steady-handed surgeon did. But I'll tell you what the cross did: it got me through the night before. And every hard night in the five years since.

A new cross beside the one carried for fifty years
Left: a new one. Right: the one that rode in a surgeon's coat pocket for fifty years — and in mine for five. The heart didn't disappear. It moved into the wood.

I never got the chance to repay that doctor — he retired the next spring. So I keep a basket of these by my front door now. And last Thanksgiving, I did for my grandchildren what he did for me.

Why a two-inch piece of wood works

It's fair to ask — my son-in-law did, with an eyebrow up. The answer fits in one sentence:

Press your thumb into the curve. Hold it for ten seconds. That's the whole product.

A thumb resting in the carved curve of the cross The cross in an open palm — about two inches

Each cross is cut from solid walnut and polished until the carved hollow fits a thumb exactly — a child's or a grown man's. Busy hands quiet the mind; anyone who's ever worried a coin or a key knows that. But a coin is just a coin.

This is a prayer you can hold. Every time a hand finds it in a pocket — before a test, on a plane, in a hallway that smells like a hospital — it says the same thing without a word: God is with you. And so is Grandma.

What happened when I handed them out

Grandmother placing a cross into a child's hands
My eight-year-old granddaughter held hers like it was made of glass.

Every pouch had a little card with the same instruction — the surgeon's instruction: "When you're worried, hold it, press your thumb into the curve, and pray."

The little ones treated them like treasure — that part I expected.

It was my fifteen-year-old grandson who surprised me. The one who shrugs at everything. He turned it over twice, said nothing, and slipped it into the front pocket of his jeans. It's been there every day since.

No lecture required. It just went into the pocket — and stayed.

Because here's what I've learned in sixty-seven years: you can't make a grandchild pray. Push, and they pull away. But you can put something in their pocket that's there at three in the afternoon when the day goes wrong — something their hand finds on its own.

I’m not the only grandmother who’s figured this out. Read what other buyers say, over and over:

"I gave this to my adopted grandson, who is a bit fidgety especially when he's worried or nervous. He recently lost his favorite Uncle... he can reach in and be comforted and remember that Christ is always with him." — Patsie F., verified five-star review
"I bought these for my children, my DILs, and all my older grandchildren... Great reminder to look to the Lord in all things!" — Angie A., verified five-star review
"These crosses were a perfect gift for our sons. We all keep them in our pockets in case we ever get anxious." — Verified five-star review

The phone call that made me cry

Video call — my grandson holding his cross up to the camera
"Grandma — look what's still in my pocket."

Three weeks after Thanksgiving, my phone rang. My grandson, nine hundred miles away, holding his little cross up to the camera before I could even say hello.

So now we have a rule, my grandkids and I, scattered across four states:

"When you miss me, hold it. I'll be holding mine."

My cross sits worn and smooth in my pocket here in Ohio. Six newer ones ride in pockets and backpacks in Texas, Georgia, and both Carolinas. Same wood. Same little heart. One family — connected by something no screen can do.

We don't think you'll send them back. Nobody ever has after the phone call comes.

What grandparents are saying

Small, easy to place in a pocket. I gave this to my adopted grandson... He recently lost his favorite Uncle so I thought this will remind him of who he is in Christ. He can reach in and be comforted and remember that Christ is always with him.

Absolutely love these, I got these to put in my kiddos Easter baskets. Smaller than I thought, which is actually perfect for them to take anywhere on the go!!

Gave this to my son to use when he was feeling anxious. He loves it! It's small but a perfect size to stick in a pocket and use discreetly. Very pretty too.

Crosses fit perfectly into men's or women's hand. When you hand it to someone they immediately lay it in their palm and then the thumb goes right to the curved thumb section. The look they give you is wonderful... It's like holding God's hand.
